Stepping Back in Time – Kerala Style

It was the end of another busy wedding season.  This year I had traveled all over India to Photograph weddings,  and I wanted to finish it off in my favorite place in India, Kerala.

There is nothing like kicking back and watching the world drift by on a house boat on the lush backwaters of Alleppey.  Or indulging in a relaxing Ayurvedic massage. After all Kerala is where this ancient art form got it’s roots!  Ayurveda is one of the oldest health care systems in the world.  No wonder I often feel like I am stepping back in time in Kerala. back to a gentler era. Their is a timeless charm you won’t find anywhere else.

Kerala is also the Culture capitol of India, with the largest festival taking place usually in April, The Thrissur Pooram Festival. An amazing site to behold with at least thirty Caparisoned elephants, decorated with colorful parasols, and a sea of humanity. Elephants are highly regarded in Kerala and often you will see them used in various temples, they are cared for by their Mahoots, it is said that a Mahoot that is called a Reghawan if they use love to control their elephants. I was thrilled to witness and photograph the daily rituals of the mahoots caring for their elephants recently while doing a photo shoot with up and coming model Phijo Philip who lived near an elephant training centre. We followed them to the river for their morning bath.  What a treat!

With pristine back waters, Lush green landscapes, delicious food options, like a traditional Thali served on Banana leaf, Kerala makes for a beautiful location for a destination wedding.  I have been fortunate to photograph a few Weddings in Kerala, they are a usually more subtle than what you might see in North India. But full of rich customs.  Your wedding guests will also love to extend their stay and see all that this beautiful paradise has to offer.

Kerala is the perfect place to get away from it all, and return home from your India Holiday feeling refreshed, and  rejuvenated, and if your like me you can’t wait to go back!  It’s no wonder the call it “Gods own Country”
